St. Michaels beats Burlington 5-3 after comeback scare

The Burlington Cougars tried to dig themselves out of a three-goal hole, but the St. Michaels Buzzers held on for a 5-3 victory.

St. Michaels made the score 5-2 on a goal by Bron Loiselle at 10:12 in the third period, and Burlington got as close as 5-3 when Daniel Volpe scored 19:25 into the third period.

Thomas Beretta was all over the ice for the Buzzers, as he registered two goals in the win. Beretta found the back of the net on the power play 6:30 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Burlington and again while 16:55 into the second to make the score 4-2 St. Michaels.

St. Michaels' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on six Burlington power plays. The Buzzers outdid their season average for goals scored. St. Michaels has scored at the pace of 2.9 goals per game during the current campaign. The Buzzers were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 24 penalty minutes.

St. Michaels also got points from Joseph Berton, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Matt Pepler also scored for St. Michaels. In addition, St. Michaels received assists from Ian Edmondson, Marco Ferraro, Scott Teskey, Ashur Elliot, Noah Jordan, Michael Andlauer, Troy Oakley, Cameron Wright, and Ryan Kruss, who contributed one each.

St. Michaels was unable to stop the Cougars from sending pucks towards the net, and Burlington eventually piled up 35 shots on goal.

Burlington additionally got points from Jack Jeffers, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Burlington also got a goal from Matt Holmes as well. Other players who recorded assists for Burlington were David Thomson, who had two and Nicholas Holt, James Thorpe, and Jacob Ovens, who each chipped in one.

Mark Manolescu rejected 32 shots on goal for the Buzzers. St. Michaels registered one goal on two power play opportunities. Andrew Lee recorded 23 saves for the Cougars. Burlington incurred 26 minutes in penalty time with three minors. For the Cougars, Louis Vlahakis was ejected from the game.
