St. Michaels beats Burlington 5-4 after comeback scare

The St. Michaels Buzzers survived a determined comeback attempt by the Burlington Cougars on the way to a 5-4 win.

St. Michaels made the score 5-3 on a goal by Thomas Beretta at 12:52 in the third period, and Burlington got as close as 5-4 when David Thomson scored 19:00 into the third period.

The Buzzers got the win behind a great game by Ashur Elliot, who had two goals and one assist. Elliot scored the first of his two goals at 6:30 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Luca Doctor picked up the assist. Elliot's next tally made the score 4-2 St. Michaels with 14:05 left in the third period. Cameron Wright provided the assist.

St. Michaels kept the Cougars' goalie busy throughout the game, and Andrew Lee made 38 saves on 43 shots. The Buzzers bested their season scoring average. St. Michaels averages 2.8 goals per game.

St. Michaels also had goals scored by Matt Pepler and Bron Loiselle, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for St. Michaels were Scott Teskey, who had two and Marco Ferraro, A.J. Dorazio, Cameron Searles, and Troy Oakley, who each chipped in one.

Burlington excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. The Cougars forced the Buzzers goalie Mark Manolescu to work between the pipes, taking 49 shots.

Burlington was led by Daniel Volpe, who tallied one goal and one assist. Volpe scored on the power play 3:20 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Burlington. A tripping penalty on Ian Edmondson had put the Cougars on the power play. Jack Jeffers picked up the assist. Others who scored for Burlington included Spencer Herbst and Liam Buckley, who scored one goal each. In addition, Burlington received assists from David Kiss, Kyle West, Ben Scheel, Jacob Ovens, and Matt Holmes, who contributed one each.

St. Michaels' Manolescu stopped 45 shots out of the 49 that he faced. The Buzzers incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Burlington incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
