Mississauga holds on for 7-6 win against Burlington

The Burlington Cougars tried to dig themselves out of a three-goal hole, but the Mississauga Chargers held on for a 7-6 victory.

Mississauga made the score 7-4 on a goal by Daniel Volpe at 16:20 in the third period, and Burlington got as close as 7-6 when Jack Jeffers scored 17:55 into the third period.

The Chargers kept the Cougars' goalie busy throughout the game, and Joe Noonan made 33 saves on 40 shots. Mississauga surpassed its usual scoring output this season. The Chargers have scored at the pace of 3.3 goals per game during the current campaign.

Mississauga also got points from Scott Docherty, who also had one goal and one assist. Mississauga also got a goal from Stefano Alonzi as well. More assists for Mississauga came via Joseph Molinaro, who had three, Marco Mattina, Phillip Chadder, Tyler Cooper, and Mitch Mehling, who contributed one each, and Nicholas Palumbo, Vince Figliomeni, and Thomas Lattavo, who each chipped in two.

Burlington forced Mississauga goalie Mitchell Heck to work between the pipes, taking 40 shots. The Cougars bested their season scoring average. Burlington averages 2.7 goals per game. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with three goals. The Cougars found themselves short handed often, totaling 24 penalty minutes and allowing eight power plays.

Burlington was helped by Willy Paul, who finished with two goals and one assist. Paul scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 3:04 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Burlington. The Cougars had taken the advantage when the Chargers' Austin Broadhurst got sent off for boarding. Mike Choma picked up the assist. Paul's next tally on the power play made the score 6-4 Mississauga with 16:41 left in the third period. Steve Mariani assisted on the tally. Burlington additionally got points from David Thomson, who also grabbed one goal and one assist and Jeffers, who also registered one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Burlington included Michael Alberga and Ben Morris, who each put in one. In addition, Burlington received assists from Kyle West, Ben Scheel, Jacob Ovens, and Dante Felicetti, who contributed one each.

Mississauga's Heck stopped 34 shots out of the 40 that he faced. The Chargers incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Burlington registered one goal on three power play opportunities. For the Cougars, Sean McLaren was ejected from the game.
