Coric's big game bests Hamilton in 7-2 Newmarket win

The Newmarket Hurricanes' Nik Coric had a big offensive game, scoring two goals and contributing one assist in his team's 7-2 win over the Hamilton Red Wings.

Coric scored on the power play at 2:49 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Newmarket and again while 8:13 into the second to make the score 4-2 Newmarket.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 18:24 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Newmarket racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with six minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. The Hurricanes surpassed its season average of 16.0 penalty minutes per game. Newmarket forced Red Wings' netminders to work all game long, taking 44 shots and forcing 37 saves. Alexander Bishop made 21 stops and Mark Sinclair made 16. The Hurricanes' goal total was higher than their season average. This season, Newmarket averages 3.5 goals per contest.

Others who scored for Newmarket included Ryan Shaw, who had two and Sam Hu, Christian Dedonato, and Taylor Joseph, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Newmarket were Cameron Nicoll, who had two and Jordan Oshowy, Markus Phillips, Curtis Harvey, and Ryan Young, who each chipped in one.

Hamilton forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and one major for 41 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 14.0 minutes per game the Red Wings had been spending in the box. Hamilton's offense rang up 33 shots on the Hurricanes' net.

The Red Wings were helped by Rylee St. Onge, who registered one goal and one assist. St. Onge scored 3:29 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Newmarket. Alexander Carlson provided the assist. Hamilton also got points from Luke Sinclair, who also had one goal and one assist. In addition, Hamilton received assists from Carl Greco, who had one.

Connor Ryckman recorded 31 saves for Newmarket. The Hurricanes registered three goals on six power play opportunities. Newmarket ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Brett Thomson was ejected from the game. Hamilton registered one goal on four power play opportunities. For the Red Wings, Erick Delaurentis was ejected from the game.
