Ryckman leads Newmarket to shutout victory over Burlington

Connor Ryckman recorded a shutout against the Burlington Cougars as the Newmarket Hurricanes picked up a 7-0 win.

Newmarket was led by Brett Thomson, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Thomson scored 53 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Newmarket. Ryan Young assisted on the tally.

The Hurricanes were often in penalty trouble, totaling seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. Newmarket had been averaging 17.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Hurricanes put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Burlington to score on any of its five power plays. Newmarket forced the Cougars goalie Evgueni Makarski to work between the pipes, taking 45 shots. The Hurricanes bested their season scoring average. This season, Newmarket averages 3.3 goals per contest. The Hurricanes got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

Newmarket additionally got points from Nik Coric, who also finished with one goal and one assist, Cameron Nicoll, who also registered one goal and one assist, and Young, who also had one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Newmarket included Sam Hu, Ryan Shaw, and Jacob Piltzmaker, who each put in one. In addition, Newmarket received assists from Adam Smith, Matt Pyz, and Anthony Salemi, who contributed one each and Curtis Harvey, Christian Dedonato, and Taylor Joseph, who each chipped in two.

Burlington racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and one major for 31 minutes in penalty time. The Cougars surpassed its season average of 23.0 penalty minutes per game. Burlington's offense operated below its season average. The Cougars average 2.4 goals per game.

Ryckman rejected 29 shots on goal for Newmarket. The Hurricanes registered three goals on eight power play opportunities. Newmarket ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Pyz was ejected from the game. Makarski recorded 38 saves for Burlington. For the Cougars, Michael Alberga was ejected from the game.
