North York squeaks by Mississauga, 6-4

The North York Rangers gutted out a close 6-4 win against the Mississauga Chargers.

North York gained the winning advantage on a goal by Nick Zanette 8:47 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer.

Matthew Whittaker was all over the ice for the Rangers, as he tallied two goals and two assists in the win. Whittaker scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 9:58 into the second period to make the score 2-2. North York had gotten the advantage when Mississauga's Vince Figliomeni was sent off for checking from behind. Michael Morgan assisted on the tally. Whittaker's next tally on the power play made the score 6-4 North York with 41 seconds left in the third period. Zanette provided the assist.

The Chargers' power play was ineffective against the Rangers' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Mississauga was unable to stop North York from sending pucks towards the net, and the Rangers eventually piled up 40 shots on goal. North York surpassed its usual scoring output this season. The Rangers have scored at the pace of 3.7 goals per game during the current campaign.

North York also got points from Ted Hunt, who also had two goals and one assist, Gabriel Valenzuela, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Zanette, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for North York were Jeremy Szabo, Ryan Takamatsu, Brett Seldon, and Will Reilly, who each chipped in one.

The Chargers forced North York goalie Gianluca Baggetta to work between the pipes, taking 32 shots.

Mississauga was led by Joseph Molinaro, who registered one goal and two assists. Molinaro scored on the power play 12:56 into the second period to make the score 3-3. The Chargers earned a power play opportunity when Whittaker was put in the box for hooking. Aaron Dutra assisted on the tally. Others who scored for Mississauga included Domenic Commisso and Jordan Addesi, who scored one goal each. More assists for Mississauga came via Zach Sternbach, Phillip Chadder, Daniel Volpe, Miller Hatten, and Austin Broadhurst, who contributed one each.

Gianluca Baggetta made 28 saves for the Rangers on 32 shots. North York incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors. Alex Lepore recorded 34 saves for Mississauga. The Chargers incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. For Mississauga, Figliomeni was ejected from the game.
