Whitby outlasts Oakville, 5-3

The Whitby Fury gutted out a close 5-3 win against the Oakville Blades.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Jake Schultz's goal in the second period proved to be the difference maker.

With two goals and four assists between them, Jeremy Wu and Jonathan OHara teamed up to power Whitby's offense. Wu racked up one goal and two assists and OHara also notched one goal and two assists.

The Fury's penalty kill excelled, as Whitby gave up one goal despite allowing 12 power plays.

The Fury got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game. Whitby could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 44 minutes in penalties during the game.

Whitby also got points from Henry Thompson, who also had one goal and one assist and OHara, who also registered one goal and two assists. Scott Kirton also scored for Whitby. Other players who recorded assists for Whitby were Ryan Kirkup, who had two and Luke Keenan and Mitch Emerson, who each chipped in one.

Oakville's defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. The Blades give up 2.5 goals per game. Oakville's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Blades finished with 24 penalty minutes.

Oakville was led by Ross Sloan, who registered two goals and one assist. Sloan scored the first of his two goals at 12:05 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Matt Lippa assisted on the tally. Sloan's next tally made the score 3-2 Whitby with 11:25 left in the third period. Tanner Shaw picked up the assist. Oakville also got a goal from Brandon Hughes as well. In addition, Oakville received assists from Kamil Tkaczuk and Greg Campbell, who contributed one each.

Tyler Feaver rejected 21 shots on goal for the Fury. Whitby registered three goals on eight power play opportunities. Brendan McGlynn made 23 saves for the Blades on 28 shots.
