Smiths Falls beats Carleton Place 5-2 as Buonincontri gets hat trick

Michael Buonincontri lifted the Smiths Falls Bears to a 5-2 victory with a hat trick against the Carleton Place Canadians.

Buonincontri notched his first tally 8:26 into the first period. He then added goals at 11:50 into the second and at 1:32 into the third.

After the loss made the series score 1-3 in the best of seven series, Carleton Place faces elimination next time out.

Smiths Falls' penalty kill excelled, as the Bears gave up zero goals despite allowing seven power plays.

Smiths Falls stifled the Canadians' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Bears kept Carleton Place's goalie busy throughout the game, and Guillaume Therien made 26 saves on 31 shots.

Others who scored for Smiths Falls included Neil Doef and Stefano Momesso, who each put in one. More assists for Smiths Falls came via Chris MacMillan, who had three and Brandon McMartin, Ryan Duhaime, Chris King, Victor Beaulac, and Zachary Senyshyn, who each chipped in one.

Smiths Falls was unable to stop the Canadians from sending pucks towards the net, and Carleton Place eventually piled up 33 shots on goal.

The Canadians were led by Andy Sturtz, who had two goals. Sturtz scored the first of his two goals at 9:21 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Smiths Falls. Kelly Summers assisted on the tally. Sturtz's next tally made the score 2-2 with 10:38 left in the second period. Stephen Baylis provided the assist. Other players who recorded assists for Carleton Place were Larry Smith and Evan Peterson, who contributed one each.

Michael Pinios rejected 31 shots on goal for the Bears. Smiths Falls incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. Carleton Place incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
