Ottawa outlasts Smiths Falls, 3-2

The Ottawa Senators and the Smiths Falls Bears were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Ottawa made the most of its opportunities and won, 3-2.

Neither team gained more than a one-goal lead, and David Chevrier's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

The win gave the Senators a 1-0 lead in the best of seven series.

Ottawa was led by Chevrier, who registered one goal. Chevrier scored 6:41 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Ottawa. Joe Shecter picked up the assist.

The Senators excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. Smiths Falls was unable to stop Ottawa from sending pucks towards the net, and the Senators eventually piled up 33 shots on goal.

Others who scored for Ottawa included Shawn Lynch and Robert Michel, who scored one goal each. More assists for Ottawa came via Thomas Crevier, who had one and Joey Champigny, who had two.

The Bears were helped by Victor Beaulac, who finished with one goal. Beaulac scored 2:27 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Smiths Falls. Brett Costello provided the assist. Smiths Falls also got a goal from Neil Doef as well. In addition, Smiths Falls received assists from Alek Deblois, Chris MacMillan, and Taylor Henry, who each chipped in one.

Ottawa's Alexandre Savard-Belanger stopped 25 shots out of the 27 that he faced. The Senators incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Cory Simic rejected 30 shots on goal for Smiths Falls. The Bears incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
