Gevaart nets hat trick, leads Dallas to 6-4 win over Topeka

Jake Gevaart netted a hat trick to lead the Dallas Jr. Stars over the Topeka Capitals, 6-4.

Gevaart got on the scoresheet 10:29 into the second period. He then added goals at 11:32 into the third and at 19:57 into the third.

After the loss made the series score 1-0 in the best of three series, Topeka faces elimination next time out.

Dallas was held back by its power play unit, which tallied two goals on nine chances.

Dallas also got points from Raurie Petrich, who also had one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Dallas included Brandon Salisbury and Blake McIntyre, who each put in one. In addition, Dallas received assists from Jack Duhe, Stephen Smith, Niko Jansen, and Tommy Stock, who contributed one each and Jake Huspen and Corey Burns, who each chipped in two.

The Capitals forced the Jr. Stars goalie Chris Mallon to work between the pipes, taking 31 shots. Topeka was ineffective while on the power play, as it was held to two goals off of 11 man advantages.

The Capitals were helped by Hardijs Kupaks, who finished with two goals and one assist. Kupaks scored the first of his two goals at 11:12 into the second period to make the score 3-3. Tommy Malkmus picked up the assist. Kupaks' next tally made the score 5-4 Dallas with 2:18 left in the third period. Topeka had gained a power play chance when Huspen was whistled for delay of game. Malkmus assisted on the tally. Topeka additionally got points from Malkmus, who also registered one goal and three assists to lead the team in points. Connor Nicholas also scored for Topeka. Other players who recorded assists for Topeka were Blake Busch, who had three.

Chris Mallon made 27 saves for Dallas on 31 shots. The Jr. Stars ended with 37 minutes in penalty time with 11 minors and one major. The Capitals' Jude Hull stopped 18 shots out of the 24 that he faced. Topeka ended with 23 minutes in penalty time with nine minors and one major.
