Buffalo outlasts Mississauga, 6-4Port Credit Arena Mon, Mar 10, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
The Buffalo Jr. Sabres gutted out a close 6-4 win against the Mississauga Chargers. Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Ryan Schmelzer's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker. The win by Buffalo clinched the best of seven series at 4-2. The Jr. Sabres were led by Schmelzer, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Schmelzer scored 16:44 into the third period to make the score 5-4 Buffalo. Jason Heerdt picked up the assist. In the losing effort, Mississauga was sparked by Lucas Venuto, who finished with two goals. Venuto scored the first of his two goals at 18:06 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Mississauga. Trevor Warnaar provided the assist. Venuto's next tally made the score 2-0 Mississauga with 10 seconds left in the first period. The Chargers had taken the advantage when Buffalo's Michael Ederer got sent off for slashing. Nick Tetley picked up the assist. The Jr. Sabres forced Mississauga goalie Austin Washkurak to work between the pipes, taking 47 shots. The defensemen of Buffalo were also effective in the Chargers' zone, and came away with three goals. Buffalo also got points from Daniel Lafontaine, who also registered one goal and one assist, Nick Desimone, who also tallied one goal and one assist, and Heerdt, who also racked up one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Buffalo also had goals scored by Wilson Vershay and Pat Egan, who scored one goal each. More assists for Buffalo came via Darren McCormick, Max Mikowski, and Nolan Sheeran, who each chipped in one. The Jr. Sabres were unable to stop Mississauga from sending pucks towards the net, and the Chargers eventually piled up 38 shots on goal. Others who scored for Mississauga included Zack Lansfield and Matt Hore, who each put in one. In addition, Mississauga received assists from Patrick Mooney, Ryan Harrison, Vince Figliomeni, and Mitch Mehling, who contributed one each. Joseph Pianta made 34 saves for Buffalo on 38 shots. The Jr. Sabres incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Washkurak recorded 41 saves for Mississauga. The Chargers incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with two minors.
