Lakefield beats Uxbridge 6-2 as Gilbert gets hat trick

Devin Gilbert lifted the Lakefield Chiefs to a 6-2 victory with a hat trick against the Uxbridge Bruins.

Gilbert got on the scoresheet 5:32 into the first period. He then added goals at 15:00 into the first and at 4:04 into the third.

The win gave Lakefield a 2-0 lead in the best of seven series.

The Chiefs' penalty kill excelled, as Lakefield gave up zero goals despite allowing six power plays.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 12:38 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Chiefs stifled Uxbridge's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Bruins were unable to stop Lakefield from sending pucks towards the net, and the Chiefs eventually piled up 53 shots on goal.

Lakefield also had goals scored by Jesse Gregory, Eric Oosting, and Travis Brault, who each put in one. In addition, Lakefield received assists from Bryce Sweeting, who had two and William Sullivan, Eric Shewell, Ryan Saunders, Connor Blair, and Derek Manley, who each chipped in one.

Uxbridge put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Lakefield to score on any of its four power plays. The Bruins forced the Chiefs goalie Zach Wainman to work between the pipes, taking 46 shots.

Uxbridge was led by Marco Mastrangelo, who registered two goals. Mastrangelo scored the first of his two goals at 8:46 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Tim Bierema picked up the assist. Mastrangelo's next tally made the score 5-2 Lakefield with 6:11 left in the third period. Other players who recorded assists for Uxbridge were Matt Trudel, who had one.

Zach Wainman made 44 saves for Lakefield on 46 shots. The Chiefs ended with 25 minutes in penalty time with 10 minors and one major. For Lakefield, Brett Thomson and Manley were ejected from the contest. Max Tjin rejected 47 shots on goal for the Bruins. Uxbridge ended with 21 minutes in penalty time with eight minors and one major. The Bruins ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Quinn Eden APM was ejected from the game.
