Brophy leads Wingham over Walkerton, 7-3

The Wingham Ironmen's Brett Brophy had a big offensive game, scoring two goals and contributing three assists in his team's 7-3 win over the Walkerton Hawks.

Brophy scored on the power play at 3:33 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Wingham and again while on the power play 18 seconds into the third to make the score 6-2 Wingham.

The win by Wingham broke a deadlock and gave the Ironmen a 2-1 advantage in the best of seven series.

Walkerton was doomed by its poor performance on special teams, as Wingham was able to score five times while on the power play.

The Ironmen made the Hawks' goaltenders to work all game long, totaling 49 shots and forcing 42 saves. Jake Ireland made 25 stops and Trevor Fleming made 17. Wingham got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed three goals during the game.

Wingham also got points from Aaron Armstrong, who also finished with two goals and two assists. Ryan McNeil also scored for Wingham. More assists for Wingham came via Travis Donaldson, who had one, Jamie Huber, who had two, and Alex Kuntz, who had four.

Walkerton was helped by Dave Mercer, who registered one goal. Mercer scored 3:48 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Walkerton. David Gallo assisted on the tally. Walkerton also had goals scored by Ryan Hamelin and Brandon Lamothe, who each put in one. In addition, Walkerton received assists from Tyler Snyder, Drew Davidson, and Chris Gillman, who each chipped in one.

Ben Nelson recorded 22 saves for the Ironmen. Wingham incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. The Hawks incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors.
