The Ayr Centennials climbed out of a two-goal hole to beat the New Hamburg Firebirds, 4-3. Ayr never led in the game until netting the game winner. The Centennials trailed 3-1 after a goal by New Hamburg's Tyler Hoffman at 6:28 in the second period. Ayr knotted things up at 3-3 on a power play goal by Jake Whibbs at 15:02 in the third period. The Centennials got the game winner on the power play at 19:59 in the third period on a goal by Whibbs. The win moved Ayr to down 2-1 in the best of seven series. The Centennials got the win on the strength of a great game by Whibbs, who had two goals and one assist. Whibbs scored the first of his two goals at 17:11 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Ben Poort picked up the assist. Whibbs' next tally made the score with 4:58 left in the third period. Ayr had taken the advantage when the Firebirds' Brandon Yantzi got sent off for spearing. Jordan Pettitt assisted on the tally. New Hamburg was unable to stop the Centennials from sending pucks towards the net, and Ayr eventually piled up 38 shots on goal. The Centennials were held back by their power play unit, which tallied two goals on 11 chances. Others who scored for Ayr included Anthony Pullia and Riley Clipper, who scored one goal each. Ayr incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Eric Peicheff made 34 saves for New Hamburg on 38 shots. The Firebirds incurred 38 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. New Hamburg ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jay Fried was ejected from the game. |
