Lakefield shrugs off penalties, upends Port Perry, 5-1

The Port Perry Mojacks failed to take advantage of their power play opportunities and the Lakefield Chiefs shook off a number of penalties to win, 5-1.

The win by Lakefield clinched the best of seven series at 4-0.

The Chiefs were paced by Shawn Mackie, who registered one goal. Mackie scored on the power play 1:49 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Lakefield. Devin Gilbert picked up the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 19:52 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Lakefield made Port Perry's netminders to work without much rest, getting 40 shots and forcing 35 saves. Drew Siydock made 25 stops and Jeff Julien made 10. The Chiefs put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Mojacks to score on any of their eight power plays.

Lakefield also had goals scored by Ryan Saunders, who had two and Bryce Sweeting and Nathan Larson, who scored one goal each. More assists for Lakefield came via William Sullivan, Jesse Gregory, Eric Oosting, and Travis Brault, who contributed one a piece.

Port Perry also got a goal from Lucas Clark as well. In addition, Port Perry received assists from Logan Evans, who had one.

Zach Wainman rejected 18 shots on goal for Lakefield. The Chiefs totaled 33 minutes in penalty time with 14 minors and one major and went 1-for-9 on the power play. Lakefield ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Gilbert was ejected from the game. Port Perry ended with 37 minutes in penalty time with 11 minors and one major. For the Mojacks, Graham Lamers was ejected from the game.
