Ayr beats Burford 5-4 after comeback scare

The Burford Bulldogs tried to dig themselves out of a four-goal hole, but the Ayr Centennials held on for a 5-4 victory.

Ayr took a 5-1 lead during the third period, only to have Burford storm back on a Pat Bates goal 16:43 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

The win gave the Centennials a 2-0 lead in the best of seven series.

Ayr got the win behind a great game by Anthony Pullia, who had two goals and one assist. Pullia scored the first of his two goals at 11:23 into the second period to make the score 3-0 Ayr. Andrew Richard provided the assist. Pullia's next tally made the score Ayr with 12:12 left in the third period. Jake Whibbs picked up the assist.

The Centennials' penalty kill managed to stymie the Bulldogs' power play, giving up only one goal while playing with a man down.

Ayr also got points from Whibbs, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Richard, who also registered one goal and one assist. Spencer Sweazy also scored for Ayr. In addition, Ayr received assists from Jeff Howlett, who had two and Mac Kemp, Ben Poort, Mike McKnight, and Riley Clipper, who each chipped in one.

Burford excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. Ayr was unable to stop the Bulldogs from sending pucks towards the net, and Burford eventually piled up 34 shots on goal.

Burford additionally got points from Chris Grand, who also had one goal and one assist. Burford also got a goal from Kyle Chaney as well. More assists for Burford came via Alex Siroishka, who had one and Tyler Vandenbussche, Brayden Hill, and Adam Harris, who each chipped in two.

Mitch Figueirdo rejected 30 shots on goal for the Centennials. Ayr incurred 28 minutes in penalty time with 14 minors. Riley Edwards recorded 25 saves for the Bulldogs. Burford incurred 24 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. For the Bulldogs, Hugh Carson was ejected from the game.
