Norwich beats Wellesley 4-2 after comeback scare

The Wellesley Applejacks tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Norwich Merchants would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 4-2.

A goal by Drake Morrell put Norwich up 4-1 in the second period, but Wellesley pulled to within two on Cal Jefferies's tally 6:58 into the third period.

Morrell was all over the ice for the Merchants, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Morrell scored the first of his two goals at 9:41 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Norwich. Todd Kemp picked up the assist. Morrell's next tally made the score Norwich with 7:21 left in the second period. Kurtis Lavis provided the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 9:25 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Norwich excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in six chances. The Merchants kept the Applejacks' goalie busy throughout the game, and Josh Heer made 32 saves on 36 shots.

Norwich also got points from Brandon Zimmermann, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Norwich also got a goal from Braeden Shand as well. Other players who recorded assists for Norwich were Todd Poirier, who had one and Mitchell Berzins, who had two.

Wellesley was held below its usual level of production. The Applejacks average 5.0 goals per game. Norwich was unable to stop Wellesley from sending pucks towards the net, and the Applejacks eventually piled up 44 shots on goal.

Felix Lantaigne also scored for Wellesley. In addition, Wellesley received assists from Taylor Doering, Reid Denstedt, Sean McEwan, and Justin Lebold, who contributed one a piece.

The Merchants' Zac Easveld stopped 42 shots out of the 44 that he faced. Norwich totaled 28 minutes in penalty time with four minors and two majors and went 0-for-2 on the power play. Team's Zach Couwenberg and Zack Morrison were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Wellesley ended with 16 minutes in penalty time with three minors and two majors. For the Applejacks, Jake Ariss and Cody Tapsell were ejected from the contest.
