Soo Firehawks survives Bloomington Jr Blaze comeback, wins 3-2

Soo Firehawks survived a determined comeback attempt by Bloomington Jr Blaze on the way to a 3-2 win.

A goal by Tyler Jones put Soo Firehawks up 3-1 in the third period, but Bloomington Jr Blaze pulled to within one on Steven Smoltz's tally 18:16 into the third period.

In a losing effort, Bloomington Jr Blaze was led by Smoltz, who registered two goals. Smoltz scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 4:44 into the third period to make the score 1-1. A boarding penalty on Nicholas Murphy had put Bloomington Jr Blaze on the power play. Dylan Farmer assisted on the tally. Smoltz's next tally on the power play made the score 3-2 Soo Firehawks with 1:44 left in the third period. Jorey Skelton provided the assist.

Soo Firehawks did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. Soo Firehawks averages 5.9 goals per game. Soo Firehawks kept Bloomington Jr Blaze's goalie busy throughout the game, and Cameron Lerner made 51 saves on 54 shots.

Soo Firehawks also got a goal from Trevor McRorie as well. Other players who recorded assists for Soo Firehawks were Cody Anderson, who had one and Andrew Holder and Kevin Killips, who contributed two a piece.

Bloomington Jr Blaze stifled Soo Firehawks' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Bloomington Jr Blaze forced Soo Firehawks goalie Brandon Hansen to work between the pipes, taking 32 shots. Bloomington Jr Blaze got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

In addition, Bloomington Jr Blaze received assists from Garret Maged, who had one.

Brandon Hansen made 30 saves for Soo Firehawks on 32 shots. Soo Firehawks incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Bloomington Jr Blaze incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
