Soo Firehawks wins tough contest against Bloomington Jr Blaze, 6-4

In a game where neither team could get a cushion, Soo Firehawks escaped with a 6-4 victory over Bloomington Jr Blaze.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Nicholas Murphy's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

Ryan Marshall and Calder Ashton provided the spark for Soo Firehawks, combining for three goals and three assists. Marshall grabbed two goals and one assist and Ashton also notched one goal and two assists.

Soo Firehawks' offense rang up 59 shots on Bloomington Jr Blaze's net. Soo Firehawks cashed in on power play opportunities, scoring two goals on three chances.

Soo Firehawks also got points from Ashton, who also had one goal and two assists to lead the team in points and Murphy, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Justin Garton also scored for Soo Firehawks. More assists for Soo Firehawks came via Kevin Killips, who had two and Matthew Majic, Andrew Holder, Anthony Laaksonen, and Quinton Myotte, who contributed one a piece.

Bloomington Jr Blaze got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

Bloomington Jr Blaze was led by Steven Smoltz, who racked up two goals and two assists. Smoltz scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 14:42 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Bloomington Jr Blaze. Bloomington Jr Blaze earned a power play opportunity when Taylor McRorie was put in the box for hooking. Jorey Skelton assisted on the tally. Smoltz's next tally on the power play made the score 5-4 Soo Firehawks with 4:59 left in the third period. Bloomington Jr Blaze had gained a power play chance when McRorie was whistled for tripping. John Urmetz provided the assist. Bloomington Jr Blaze additionally got points from Skelton, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Micah Young, who also registered one goal and one assist. In addition, Bloomington Jr Blaze received assists from Craig Jarzen, who had one and Dylan Farmer, who had two.

Brandon Hansen rejected 18 shots on goal for Soo Firehawks. Soo Firehawks incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Cameron Lerner recorded 53 saves for Bloomington Jr Blaze. Bloomington Jr Blaze incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
