Soo Firehawks beats Michigan Ice Dogs 12-2 as Murphy gets hat trick

Nicholas Murphy lifted Soo Firehawks to a 12-2 victory with a hat trick against Michigan Ice Dogs.

Murphy got on the scoresheet 12:08 into the first period. He then added goals at 8:54 into the second and at 12:58 into the third.

Soo Firehawks made Michigan Ice Dogs' goaltenders to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, getting 67 shots and forcing 55 saves. Anthony Veresan made 39 stops and Vincent Ryckman made 16. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with three goals.

Soo Firehawks additionally got points from Trevor McRorie, who also tallied one goal and one assist, Ryan Marshall, who also had one goal and two assists, Kevin Killips, who also registered one goal and three assists, James Goudreau, who also racked up one goal and one assist, Calder Ashton, who also registered two goals and two assists, Taylor McRorie, who also had one goal and one assist, and Nick Papandrea, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Parker Michels also scored for Soo Firehawks. In addition, Soo Firehawks received assists from Luke Wizauer, Matthew MacLaren, and Justin Garton, who contributed one a piece and Matthew Majic, Cody Anderson, and Anthony Laaksonen, who each chipped in two.

Michigan Ice Dogs' offense rang up 32 shots on Soo Firehawks' net.

Michigan Ice Dogs was led by Hunter Ledgerwood, who had two goals. Ledgerwood scored the first of his two goals at 17:11 into the first period to make the score 3-1 Soo Firehawks. Logan Bennett provided the assist. Ledgerwood's next tally made the score 7-2 Soo Firehawks with 8:31 left in the second period. Michigan Ice Dogs earned a power play opportunity when Majic was put in the box for unsportsmanlike conduct. Marc Rotondo assisted on the tally. Other players who recorded assists for Michigan Ice Dogs were Christopher Carpenter, who had one.

Brandon Hansen made 30 saves for Soo Firehawks on 32 shots. Soo Firehawks incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Michigan Ice Dogs incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
