Pensacola uses shootout to best Peoria, 2-1 (2-1 SO)

Pensacola Bay Center    Fri, Mar 14, 2014

The Pensacola Ice Flyers and the Peoria Rivermen both failed to score in overtime, but Pensacola won the game 2-1 (2-1 SO) after Joe Caveney's deciding goal in the shootout.

The shootout lasted for 12 attempts between the teams. Peoria got a shootout goal from Chris Greene. The Ice Flyers also got a shootout goal from John Dunbar.

Pensacola came back from a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Ice Flyers fell behind 1-0 after a goal by the Rivermen's Matt Viola at 10:36 in the first period. Pensacola knotted things up at 1-1 on a goal by Jeremy Gates at 13:26 in the first period.

The Ice Flyers' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Peoria power plays. Pensacola's offense was clicking better than usual and put 49 shots on goal during the game, better than the 29.4 shots per game it averages.

In addition, Pensacola received assists from Steve Whitely and Dunbar, who each chipped in one.

Peoria excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. The Rivermen relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Garrett Vermeersch, Taylor Larsen and Robert Vanwynsberghe took 10 of the team's 18 shots.

The Ice Flyers' Ross MacKinnon stopped 17 shots out of the 18 that he faced. Pensacola incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Kyle Rank made 47 saves for Peoria on 48 shots. The Rivermen incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
