Mississippi RiverKings uses shootout to best Columbus, 5-4 (3-1 SO)

Sean Jones scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and Mississippi RiverKings picked up the extra point in a 5-4 (3-1 SO) win over the Columbus Cottonmouths.

The two teams needed eight turns to complete the shootout. Columbus got a shootout goal from Matt Gingera. Mississippi RiverKings also got shootout goals from Matt Whitehead and Jones.

Mississippi RiverKings' penalty kill excelled, as Mississippi RiverKings gave up one goal despite allowing nine power plays.

In a losing effort, the Cottonmouths were paced by Gingera, who racked up two goals. Gingera scored the first of his two goals at 14:12 into the second period to make the score 3-3. Jordan Draper picked up the assist. Gingera's next tally made the score 4-3 Columbus with 10:00 left in the third period. Sam Bowles assisted on the tally.

Mississippi RiverKings was often in penalty trouble, totaling eight minors and two majors for 26 minutes in penalty time. Mississippi RiverKings had been averaging 20.0 minutes in penalties per game. With 41 shots on target during the contest, Mississippi RiverKings exceeded the 23.5 shots it averages per game this year.

Mississippi RiverKings was led by Pat Schafer, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Schafer scored on the power play 5:37 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Mississippi RiverKings. Mississippi RiverKings had gained a power play chance when Neilsson Arcibal was whistled for tripping. Phil Bronner picked up the assist. Mississippi RiverKings also had goals scored by Devin Mantha, Lucas LaBelle, and Mike Hayward, who each put in one. More assists for Mississippi RiverKings came via Whitehead, who had two and Mike Grace, Andrew Randazzo, and Jones, who contributed one a piece.

Columbus found itself short handed often, totaling 24 penalty minutes and allowing seven power plays. The Cottonmouths relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Gingera, Bowles and Arcibal took 22 of the team's 41 shots.

Columbus additionally got points from Draper, who also finished with one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Columbus also got a goal from Levi Lind as well. In addition, Columbus received assists from Andy Willigar, who had one.

Dan McWhinney rejected 37 shots on goal for Mississippi RiverKings. Curtis Martinu made 36 saves for Columbus on 40 shots.
