Louisiana holds on for 5-4 win against Mississippi RiverKingsCajundome Fri, Jan 31, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
Mississippi RiverKings tried to dig itself out of a three-goal hole, but the Louisiana IceGators held on for a 5-4 victory. Louisiana took a 5-2 lead during the third period, only to have Mississippi RiverKings storm back on a Pat Schafer goal 16:41 into the third period to pull to one goal down. The IceGators were often in penalty trouble, totaling eight minors and one major for 21 minutes in penalty time. Louisiana surpassed its season average of 18.0 penalty minutes per game. The IceGators were helped by Kirk Byczynski, who finished with one goal. Byczynski scored on the power play 6:52 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Louisiana. Louisiana had gotten the advantage when Mississippi RiverKings' Paul Clancy was sent off for tripping. Shawn McNeil picked up the assist. Louisiana additionally got points from Jeremey Boyer, who also registered one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Louisiana included Jeff Grant, Jordan Braid, and Adam Stuart, who each put in one. More assists for Louisiana came via Bret Peppler and Chris Wilson, who each chipped in one and Clark Byczynski and Matthew Robertson, who contributed two a piece. Mississippi RiverKings relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Matt Harrington, Sean Jones and Schafer took 11 of the team's 21 shots. Mississippi RiverKings also got points from Harrington, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Mississippi RiverKings also had goals scored by Brett Valliquette and Matt Whitehead, who scored one goal each. In addition, Mississippi RiverKings received assists from Mike Hayward, who had two and Devin Mantha, Phil Bronner, and Andrew Randazzo, who each chipped in one. Kiefer Smiley recorded 17 saves for the IceGators. Louisiana registered three goals on seven power play opportunities. Matthew Krahn made 20 saves for Mississippi RiverKings on 25 shots. Mississippi RiverKings totaled 19 minutes in penalty time with seven minors and one major and went 2-for-8 on the power play.
