Columbus beats Huntsville 6-4 as Shupe gets hat trick

Preston Shupe lifted the Columbus Cottonmouths to a 6-4 victory with a hat trick against the Huntsville Havoc.

Shupe got on the scoresheet 15:05 into the second period. He then added goals at 11:19 into the third and at 18:58 into the third.

Columbus' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Huntsville power plays. The Cottonmouths' goal total was higher than their season average. Columbus averages 3.2 goals per game. With 46 shots on target during the contest, the Cottonmouths exceeded the 26.2 shots they average per game this year.

Columbus additionally got points from Neilsson Arcibal, who also racked up one goal and two assists, Jason Gray, who also tallied one goal and one assist, and Sam Bowles, who also registered one goal and one assist. More assists for Columbus came via Tory Allan, who had two and Tom Maldonado, Andy Willigar, Matt Gingera, and Jordan Draper, who each chipped in one.

Columbus was unable to stop Huntsville from sending pucks towards the net, and the Havoc eventually piled up 43 shots on goal.

Huntsville was helped by Eric Alexander, who had one goal and one assist. Alexander scored 15:18 into the second period to make the score 3-3. Leland Fidler provided the assist. Huntsville also got points from Nick Lazorko, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Huntsville also had goals scored by Justin Cseter and Ray Ortiz, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Huntsville were Sam Cannata, Mike Gurtler, and Josh Harris, who contributed one a piece.

Andrew Loewen made 39 saves for the Cottonmouths on 43 shots. Columbus incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. The Havoc's Kevin Genoe stopped 40 shots out of the 46 that he faced. Huntsville incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
