Louisiana shrugs off penalties, upends Fayetteville, 5-2

Despite having to fight off several power plays, the Louisiana IceGators were able to defeat the Fayetteville FireAntz, 5-2.

Louisiana was led by Jeff Grant, who finished with one goal. Grant scored on the power play 6:16 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Louisiana. A hooking penalty on Kevin Kessler had put the IceGators on the power play. Adam Stuart assisted on the tally.

Louisiana forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up six minors and two majors for 22 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 18.0 minutes per game the IceGators had been spending in the box. Louisiana's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on six Fayetteville power plays. The IceGators put 33 shots on net during the contest, more than the 28.5 they average per game.

Louisiana additionally got points from Stuart, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Louisiana also had goals scored by Shawn McNeil, Matthew Robertson, and Bret Peppler, who scored one goal each. More assists for Louisiana came via Greg Brown, Tyler Lyon, Chris Wilson, Jeremey Boyer, and Kirk Byczynski, who each chipped in one and Clark Byczynski and Tyler Barr, who contributed two a piece.

Fayetteville kept Louisiana's goalie busy throughout the game, and Kiefer Smiley made 29 saves on 31 shots.

The FireAntz were helped by Justin Barr, who racked up one goal. Barr scored 13:46 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Louisiana. Chris Greene picked up the assist. Derek Elliott also scored for Fayetteville. Other players who recorded assists for Fayetteville were John Clewlow, Brandon Richardson, and Matt Ridley, who each chipped in one.

The IceGators registered two goals on six power play opportunities. Fayetteville's Peter Skoggard stopped 28 shots out of the 33 that he faced. The FireAntz ended with 19 minutes in penalty time with seven minors and one major.
