Louisiana outlasts Columbus, 3-2Columbus Civic Center Sun, Jan 26, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
The game between the Louisiana IceGators and the Columbus Cottonmouths was tight through all 60 minutes, but in the end Louisiana emerged with a 3-2 win. The IceGators gained the winning advantage on a goal by Jeff Grant 3:19 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer. Grant had two goals to lead Louisiana to victory. The IceGators forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 10 minors and three majors for 35 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 18.0 minutes per game Louisiana had been spending in the box. Louisiana also got a goal from Tyler Lyon as well. Other players who recorded assists for Louisiana were Kirk Byczynski, who had two and Shawn McNeil and Jeremey Boyer, who each chipped in one. The Columbus penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled eight minors and three majors for 31 minutes in penalty time. The Cottonmouths surpassed its season average of 26.0 penalty minutes per game. Columbus put 32 shots on net during the contest, more than the 25.2 it averages per game. The Cottonmouths were helped by Preston Shupe, who racked up one goal. Shupe scored on the power play 1:25 into the third period to make the score 2-2. Columbus had gotten the advantage when the IceGators' Tyler Barr was sent off for boarding. Andy Willigar picked up the assist. Tom Maldonado also scored for Columbus. In addition, Columbus received assists from Tory Allan, who had one. Louisiana's Kiefer Smiley stopped 30 shots out of the 32 that he faced. The IceGators registered two goals on five power play opportunities. Andrew Loewen made 22 saves for the Cottonmouths on 25 shots. Columbus registered two goals on seven power play opportunities.
