Pensacola rolls over Mississippi Surge, 6-1

The Pensacola Ice Flyers had a two-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 6-1 win over Mississippi Surge.

Pensacola was led by goalie Peter Di Salvo, who finished with 30 saves while allowing one goal. Di Salvo certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.6 entering the contest.

The Ice Flyers were paced by Brett Lutes, who tallied one goal. Lutes scored 6:01 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Pensacola. Ryan Salvis picked up the assist.

Pensacola racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with four minors and three majors for 23 minutes in penalty time. The Ice Flyers surpassed its season average of 18.0 penalty minutes per game. Pensacola bested its season scoring average. This season, the Ice Flyers average 3.3 goals per contest. Pensacola put 34 shots on net during the contest, more than the 26.0 it averages per game.

Pensacola also got points from Joshua Turnbull, who also racked up one goal and one assist, Shaun Arvai, who also registered one goal and one assist, and Adam Pawlick, who also had one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Pensacola included Keegan Flaherty and Corey Banfield, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Pensacola were Bennett Schneider, who had two and Malcolm Lyles, Nate Peterson, Joe Caveney, and John Dunbar, who each chipped in one.

Mississippi Surge was often in penalty trouble, totaling seven minors and three majors for 29 minutes in penalty time. Mississippi Surge had been averaging 17.0 minutes in penalties per game. Mississippi Surge forced the Ice Flyers goalie Di Salvo to work between the pipes, taking 31 shots.

Mississippi Surge was led by Justin MacDonald, who scored the team's only goal. MacDonald scored on the power play 15:02 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Pensacola. Mississippi Surge earned a power play opportunity when Turnbull was put in the box for hooking. Joe Tolles provided the assist.
