Mississippi Surge squeaks by Louisiana, 4-3Mississippi Coast Coliseum Fri, Jan 10, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
Mississippi Surge gutted out a close 4-3 win against the Louisiana IceGators. No lead was more than one goal during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Tommy Lange at 8:13 of the third period. Lange had a great game for Mississippi Surge, netting two goals. With 37 shots on target during the contest, Mississippi Surge exceeded the 23.7 shots it averages per game this year. Mississippi Surge also had goals scored by Justin MacDonald and Mike Lysyj, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Mississippi Surge were Dean Moore, Kyle Kudroch, Mark Thorburn, and Bill Baker, who contributed one a piece. Louisiana excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. The IceGators were helped by Kirk Byczynski, who finished with one goal. Byczynski scored on the power play 10:41 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Louisiana had taken the advantage when Mississippi Surge's Baker got sent off for tripping. Shawn McNeil assisted on the tally. Louisiana also got points from McNeil, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Chris Wilson also scored for Louisiana. More assists for Louisiana came via Jason Cohen, Matthew Robertson, Bret Peppler, Greg Brown, and Adam Stuart, who each chipped in one. Dan Clarke recorded 25 saves for Mississippi Surge. Mississippi Surge incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Kiefer Smiley made 33 saves for the IceGators on 37 shots. Louisiana incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
