Huntsville holds on for 4-2 win against Mississippi RiverKingsBreland Homes Ice Fri, Jan 10, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
The Huntsville Havoc survived a determined comeback attempt by Mississippi RiverKings on the way to a 4-2 win. Huntsville made the score 4-0 on a goal by Ray Ortiz at 1:41 in the third period, and Mississippi RiverKings got as close as 4-2 when Paul Clancy scored 17:07 into the third period. The Havoc got the win on the strength of a great game by Justin Fox, who had two goals and one assist. Fox scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 11:08 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Huntsville. Huntsville had taken the advantage when Mississippi RiverKings' Andrew Randazzo got sent off for interference. Mike Gurtler picked up the assist. Fox's next tally on the power play made the score 3-0 Huntsville with 18:32 left in the third period. The Havoc had gained a power play chance when Mike Hayward was whistled for tripping. Leland Fidler provided the assist. The Huntsville penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled seven minors and two majors for 24 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 19.0 minutes per game the Havoc had been spending in the box. Huntsville put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Mississippi RiverKings to score on any of its four power plays. With 47 shots on target during the contest, the Havoc exceeded the 29.1 shots they average per game this year. Huntsville also got points from Stuart Stefan, who also had one goal and one assist. More assists for Huntsville came via Dominic Osman, Justin Cseter, and Josh Harris, who contributed one a piece. Mississippi RiverKings racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 13 minors and two majors for 56 minutes in penalty time. Mississippi RiverKings surpassed its season average of 19.0 penalty minutes per game. Mississippi RiverKings relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Matt Harrington, Devin Mantha and Tyler Sheldrake took 11 of the team's 21 shots. In addition, Mississippi RiverKings received assists from Leo Thomas and Matthew Krahn, who each chipped in one. Kevin Genoe recorded 19 saves for Huntsville. The Havoc registered three goals on nine power play opportunities. Mississippi RiverKings' Krahn stopped 43 shots out of the 47 that he faced. For Mississippi RiverKings, Sheldrake was ejected from the game.
