Pensacola downs Mississippi RiverKings, 5-2

Justin Alonzo grabbed one point to lead the Pensacola Ice Flyers to a 5-2 victory over Mississippi RiverKings.

Pensacola was sparked by Alonzo, who finished with one goal. Alonzo scored 9:09 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Pensacola. Joshua Turnbull picked up the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 16:00 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Ice Flyers forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up four minors and three majors for 33 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 19.0 minutes per game Pensacola had been spending in the box. The Ice Flyers excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. By firing 40 shots on goal, Pensacola exceeded the 24.0 shots it averages per game this year.

Pensacola additionally got points from Brett Lutes, who also racked up one goal and two assists, Ryan Salvis, who also tallied one goal and one assist, and Adam Pawlick, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Pensacola also got a goal from Steve Whitely as well. In addition, Pensacola received assists from Shaun Arvai, who had one and John Dunbar, who had two.

The Mississippi RiverKings penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled eight minors and three majors for 41 minutes in penalty time. Mississippi RiverKings surpassed its season average of 19.0 penalty minutes per game. Mississippi RiverKings' defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. Mississippi RiverKings is averaging 2.2 goals against for the season.

Mississippi RiverKings was led by Matt Whitehead, who tallied two goals. Whitehead scored the first of his two goals at 17:52 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Todd Hosmer provided the assist. Whitehead's next tally made the score 3-2 Pensacola with 12:35 left in the third period. Matt Harrington picked up the assist. Other players who recorded assists for Mississippi RiverKings were Leo Thomas, who had one.

The Ice Flyers' Ross MacKinnon stopped 22 shots out of the 24 that he faced. Pensacola registered two goals on nine power play opportunities. For the Ice Flyers, Joe Bueltel was ejected from the game. Matthew Krahn made 35 saves for Mississippi RiverKings on 40 shots. Mississippi RiverKings ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Tyler Sheldrake was ejected from the game.
