Bloomington's Walrod deadly on offense in 4-1 win against Peoria

The Bloomington Thunder relied on the scoring touch of Kevin Walrod, who netted two goals, to beat the Peoria Rivermen, 4-1.

Walrod's tallies came at 15:24 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Bloomington and on the power play 18:14 into the second to make the score 3-1 Bloomington.

Bloomington was led by goalie Max Strang, who finished with 30 saves while allowing one goal. Strang managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 3.9 prior to the game.

Peoria's power play was ineffective against the Thunder's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Bloomington was often in penalty trouble, totaling eight minors and three majors for 51 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 32.0 minutes per game the Thunder had been spending in the box. By firing 33 shots on goal, Bloomington exceeded the 23.5 shots it averages per game this year.

Others who scored for Bloomington included Burke Gallimore and Tyler Noseworthy, who scored one goal each. In addition, Bloomington received assists from Paul Arnott Jr, who had one and Curtis Megginson and Sy Nutkevitch, who contributed two a piece.

The Rivermen racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with six minors and two majors for 32 minutes in penalty time. Peoria had been averaging 19.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Rivermen's offense operated below they season average. Peoria averages 3.3 goals per game. The Rivermen relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Garrett Vermeersch, Nick Wheeler and Paul Chiasson took 16 of the team's 31 shots.

More assists for Peoria came via Nick Prockow, who had one.

The Thunder registered one goal on four power play opportunities. Bloomington ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Ron Cramer was ejected from the game. Eric Levine made 29 saves for Peoria on 33 shots.
