Mississippi Surge hangs on, beats Columbus 3-2

Mississippi Surge beat the Columbus Cottonmouths, 3-2, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Tommy Lange provided Mississippi Surge with the game-winning tally when he scored 6:20 into the the first period. Chapen LeBlond provided the assist.

Mississippi Surge got the win on the strength of a great game by LeBlond, who had one goal and two assists. LeBlond scored short handed 10:18 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Mississippi Surge. An interference call on David Sallander put Mississippi Surge on the penalty kill. Justin MacDonald picked up the assist.

Columbus' power play was ineffective against Mississippi Surge's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

The Mississippi Surge penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 11 minors and two majors for 32 minutes in penalty time. Mississippi Surge surpassed its season average of 17.0 penalty minutes per game. Mississippi Surge stifled the Cottonmouths' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man.

Mississippi Surge also got a goal from Tom Janosz as well. Other players who recorded assists for Mississippi Surge were Mike Lysyj, who had two.

Columbus could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 24 minutes in penalties during the game. The Cottonmouths was shut out on the power play, going scoring scoreless on 10 chances with a man advantage. With 50 shots on target during the contest, Columbus exceeded the 24.9 shots it averages per game this year.

The Cottonmouths were helped by Tory Allan, who had one goal. Allan scored 14:03 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Mississippi Surge. Alex Gallant provided the assist. Jordan Braid also scored for Columbus.

Mississippi Surge's Dan Clarke stopped 48 shots out of the 50 that he faced. Mississippi Surge registered one goal on three power play opportunities. Travis Bosch made 17 saves for Columbus on 20 shots.
