Pensacola beats Mississippi RiverKings 6-5 after comeback scare

The Pensacola Ice Flyers survived a determined comeback attempt by Mississippi RiverKings on the way to a 6-5 win.

Pensacola took a 6-4 lead during the third period, only to have Mississippi RiverKings storm back on a Todd Hosmer goal 13:46 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

Joshua Turnbull was all over the ice for the Ice Flyers, as he tallied one goal and four assists in the win. Turnbull scored on the power play 9:27 into the third period to make the score 5-4 Pensacola. Pensacola had taken the advantage when Mississippi RiverKings' Charles LaChance got sent off for slashing. Paul Rodrigues provided the assist.

The Ice Flyers forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up nine minors and one major for 33 minutes in penalty time. Pensacola surpassed its season average of 19.0 penalty minutes per game. The Ice Flyers bested their season scoring average. This season, Pensacola averages 3.5 goals per contest. The Ice Flyers relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Justin Alonzo, Brett Lutes and Turnbull took 13 of the team's 25 shots.

Pensacola also got points from Alonzo, who also registered two goals and two assists, Rodrigues, who also racked up two goals and one assist, and Mike MacIntyre, who also had one goal and one assist. More assists for Pensacola came via Shaun Arvai, who had two and Keegan Flaherty and Adam Pawlick, who contributed one a piece.

Mississippi RiverKings found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. Mississippi RiverKings averages 2.8 goals per game. Mississippi RiverKings' defense was uncharacteristically lax during the game. Mississippi RiverKings gives up 2.1 goals per game. By firing 40 shots on goal, Mississippi RiverKings exceeded the 29.4 shots it averages per game this year.

Mississippi RiverKings additionally got points from Tyler Melancon, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Mississippi RiverKings included Devin Mantha and Corey Fulton, who each put in one. In addition, Mississippi RiverKings received assists from Daniel Sobotka, who had two, Andrew Randazzo, who had three, and Kory Kaunisto, Mike Grace, and Matt Whitehead, who each chipped in one.

Ross MacKinnon recorded 35 saves for Pensacola. The Ice Flyers registered two goals on four power play opportunities. Pensacola ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Lutes was ejected from the game. Mississippi RiverKings' Matthew Krahn stopped 19 shots out of the 25 that he faced. Mississippi RiverKings incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
