Huge game by Gurtler boosts Huntsville over Columbus, 6-2

Mike Gurtler had one goal and three assists to lead the Huntsville Havoc to a 6-2 victory over the Columbus Cottonmouths.

Gurtler scored on the power play 7:00 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Huntsville. Huntsville earned a power play opportunity when Kyle Johnson was put in the box for holding. Rob Florentino assisted on the tally. Gurtler dished an assist on Justin Fox's goal that made the score 1-0 Huntsville at 1:23 into the first period. He then added assists on Nick Lazorko's goal at 6:03 into the first and on Josh Harris's goal at 13:29 into the third.

Columbus' power play was ineffective against the Havoc's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Huntsville forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and three majors for 31 minutes in penalty time. The Havoc had been averaging 19.0 minutes in penalties per game.

Huntsville additionally got points from Fox, who also registered one goal and one assist and Harris, who also finished with two goals and one assist. Huntsville also got a goal from Ray Ortiz as well. In addition, Huntsville received assists from Dominic Osman, Justin Cseter, Brandon Perry, and Paul Kurceba, who each chipped in one.

The the Cottonmouths penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled nine minors and three majors for 33 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 29.0 minutes per game Columbus had been spending in the box.

The Cottonmouths were helped by Matt Gingera, who had one goal. Gingera scored 11:44 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Huntsville. Ian McNulty picked up the assist. Jordan Braid also scored for Columbus. Other players who recorded assists for Columbus were Jason Gray and Jordan Draper, who contributed one a piece.

Jesse Kallechy recorded 26 saves for Huntsville. The Havoc registered two goals on seven power play opportunities. Columbus' Andrew Loewen stopped 24 shots out of the 30 that he faced.
