Knoxville uses early goal to top Huntsville, 2-0

The Knoxville Ice Bears beat the Huntsville Havoc, 2-0, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

A goal 1:23 into the the first period by Cody Dion proved to be the game winner, and powered Knoxville to the victory Jon Higgins provided the assist.

The Ice Bears were boosted by Bryan Hince, who turned in a shutout with 32 saves. The solid play of Hince will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 2.97.

Knoxville was led by Dion, who racked up one goal.

The Ice Bears stifled Huntsville's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Knoxville failed to reach its usual level of shot production, putting 17 pucks on goal after averaging 27.9 shots per game this season. The Ice Bears' defensive play was more effective than usual against the Havoc. Knoxville averages 3.0 goals allowed per game.

Mark Van Vliet also scored for Knoxville. In addition, Knoxville received assists from Jeremy Klaver and Phil Bronner, who each chipped in one.

Huntsville was held below its usual level of production. The Havoc average 4.2 goals per game. The Ice Bears were unable to stop Huntsville from sending pucks towards the net, and the Havoc eventually piled up 32 shots on goal.

Huntsville was led by Josh Harris, who took five shots.

Knoxville totaled 25 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and had no power play opportunities. For the Ice Bears, Francis Drolet was ejected from the game. The Havoc's starting goalie, Jesse Kallechy, made nine saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Kevin Genoe, who stopped six shots. Huntsville incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
