Louisiana beats Mississippi Surge 7-5 after comeback scare

The Louisiana IceGators survived a determined comeback attempt by Mississippi Surge on the way to a 7-5 win.

A goal by Chris Wilson put Louisiana up 7-4 in the third period, but Mississippi Surge pulled to within two on Mitch Bruijsten's tally 15:32 into the third period.

The IceGators' offense rang up 33 shots on Mississippi Surge's net. Louisiana found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. The IceGators average 3.8 goals per game.

Louisiana was helped by Matthew Robertson, who registered three goals. Louisiana also got points from Jason Cohen, who also tallied one goal and one assist, Wilson, who also racked up one goal and four assists to lead the team in points, and Jake Trask, who also had one goal and one assist. Louisiana also got a goal from Reid MacLeod as well. More assists for Louisiana came via Jeremey Boyer, who had three and Tyler Lyon, Josh Duplantis, Shawn McNeil, and Bret Peppler, who contributed one a piece.

Mississippi Surge got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

Mississippi Surge additionally got points from Mike Looby, who also finished with one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Kyle Fletcher also scored for Mississippi Surge. In addition, Mississippi Surge received assists from Nicholas Kuqali, Justin MacDonald, Brian Elser, and Reid Edmondson, who each chipped in one.

Kiefer Smiley made 12 saves before being replaced by Matt Zenzola, who took the win and made 13 saves. The IceGators totaled nine minutes in penalty time with two minors and one major and went 1-for-4 on the power play. Mathieu Dugas made 26 saves for Mississippi Surge on 33 shots. Mississippi Surge totaled 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 1-for-2 on the power play.
