Mississippi RiverKings downs Peoria in overtime, 4-3 (OT)Landers Center Sat, Nov 09, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
Mississippi RiverKings' Matt Whitehead scored 4:18 into overtime to beat the Peoria Rivermen, 4-3 (OT). Although Mississippi RiverKings was up by as many as two goals in the third period, Peoria kept the game interesting by staging a comeback that ultimately fell short. The Rivermen pulled to within 3-2 on a goal by Tyler Fernandez at 16:44 in the third period. Whitehead was all over the ice for Mississippi RiverKings, as he tallied two goals and two assists in the win. Whitehead scored the first of his two goals at 1:55 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Mississippi RiverKings. Todd Hosmer assisted on the tally. Whitehead's next tally made the score 4-3 Mississippi RiverKings with 15:42 left in overtime. Leo Thomas picked up the assist. Mississippi RiverKings forced Peoria goalie Eric Levine to work between the pipes, taking 33 shots. Mississippi RiverKings also got points from Hosmer, who also had two goals and one assist. More assists for Mississippi RiverKings came via Mike Grace and Daniel Sobotka, who each chipped in one. The Rivermen put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Mississippi RiverKings to score on any of its five power plays. Peoria was below its usual level of shot production, taking 22 shots compared to the 32.2 the Rivermen average. Peoria was led by Tyler Amburgey, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Amburgey scored on the power play 15:34 into the first period to make the score 1-1. A too many men penalty on Whitehead had put the Rivermen on the power play. Dean Yakura provided the assist. Peoria also got a goal from Adam Hartley as well. Other players who recorded assists for Peoria were Garrett Vermeersch, Parker Stanfield, and Ryan Raven, who contributed one a piece. Mississippi RiverKings' Matthew Krahn stopped 19 shots out of the 22 that he faced. Mississippi RiverKings incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Eric Levine made 29 saves for Peoria on 33 shots. The Rivermen incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
