Wingham outlasts Walkerton, 4-2

The Wingham Ironmen and the Walkerton Hawks were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Wingham made the most of its opportunities and won, 4-2.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Alex Kuntz's goal in the second period proved to be the difference maker.

Jamie Huber had a great game for the Ironmen, netting two goals. Huber found the back of the net 4:41 into the first period to make the score 1-1 and again while 16:49 into the first to make the score 2-2.

Wingham forced Hawks' goalies to work in net, racking up 44 shots and forcing 40 saves. Trevor Fleming made 40 stops and Jake Ireland made zero. The Ironmen put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Walkerton to score on any of its four power plays.

Justin Jacklin also scored for Wingham. Other players who recorded assists for Wingham were Aaron Armstrong, who had three and Ben Nelson and Brett Brophy, who each chipped in one.

The Hawks were held below their usual level of production. Walkerton puts an average of 5.1 pucks into the net per game.

The Hawks were helped by Dave Mercer, who registered one goal. Mercer scored 10:01 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Walkerton. David Gallo picked up the assist. Walkerton also got a goal from Ryan Hamelin as well. In addition, Walkerton received assists from Calvin Penney and Lauchlin Elder, who contributed one a piece.

Nelson recorded 22 saves for Wingham. The Ironmen incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Walkerton incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors.
