Armstrong's hat trick boosts Wingham over Mitchell, 8-4

Aaron Armstrong lifted the Wingham Ironmen to an 8-4 victory with a hat trick against the Mitchell Hawks.

Armstrong's first goal came 15:59 into the first period. He then added goals at 5:14 into the second and at 7:36 into the third.

The Wingham penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled nine minors and one major for 33 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 19.0 minutes per game the Ironmen had been spending in the box. Wingham forced Hawks' goalies to work all game long, getting 36 shots and forcing 28 saves. Tyler MacGregor made 16 stops and Chris Wallace made 12. The Ironmen found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. Wingham averages 5.3 goals per game. The Ironmen were held back by their power play unit, which tallied two goals on nine chances.

Wingham also got points from Keaton Willis, who also had one goal and one assist, Justin Jacklin, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Ryan McNeil, who also registered one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Wingham included Matt McCracken and Alex Kuntz, who each put in one. More assists for Wingham came via Jamie Huber, who had three and Brody Tenpas and Greg Scott, who each chipped in one.

Mitchell was often in penalty trouble, totaling six minors and one major for 37 minutes in penalty time. The Hawks had been averaging 27.0 minutes in penalties per game. Mitchell made Ironmen's netminders to work without much rest, totaling 38 shots and forcing 34 saves. Ben Nelson made 20 stops and Jaden Shrier made 14.

The Hawks were helped by Blake Pickering, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Pickering scored on the power play 13:00 into the second period to make the score 6-1 Wingham. A roughing penalty on Willis had put Mitchell on the power play. Matt Van DeWalle picked up the assist. Mitchell also had goals scored by Ethen Adair, Brent Rae, and Eric MacPhee (AP), who scored one goal each. In addition, Mitchell received assists from Zach Goodhew, who had one and Jerry Ennet, who had two.

Team's McCracken, Jordie Schneider, and Jacklin were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. The Hawks registered two goals on six power play opportunities. For Mitchell, Jeff Byatt and Scott Fries were ejected from the contest.
