Early goals doom Hanover, falls to Wingham, 7-1

The Hanover Barons fell behind early, and the Wingham Ironmen kept piling on the points on the way to a 7-1 victory.

Aaron Armstrong had two goals and three assists to lead Wingham. Armstrong scored the first of his two goals at 38 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Wingham. Alex Kuntz assisted on the tally. Armstrong's next tally made the score 4-0 Wingham with 42 seconds left in the first period. Jamie Huber picked up the assist.

The Ironmen were led by goalie Nathan Watson, who finished with 30 saves while allowing one goal. Watson managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 3.78 prior to the game.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 20:00 into the first period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Wingham forced Hanover's goalies to work without much rest, racking up 40 shots and forcing 33 saves. Cam Harron made 33 stops and Ben Errington made zero.

Wingham also got points from Huber, who also grabbed two goals and four assists to lead the team in points and Kuntz, who also finished with one goal and four assists. Matt McCracken also scored for Wingham. In addition, Wingham received assists from Brett Brophy, who had one.

The Barons racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with nine minors and one major for 33 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 22.0 minutes per game Hanover had been spending in the box. The Barons' offense operated below they season average. Hanover puts an average of 3.1 pucks into the net per game. The Barons' offense rang up 31 shots on the Ironmen's net.

Hanover also got a goal from Jarrett Kuntz as well. More assists for Hanover came via Ryne Weppler and Tyson Soers, who contributed one a piece.

Wingham totaled 23 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 2-for-7 on the power play. For the Ironmen, Justin Jacklin was ejected from the game. Hanover registered zero goals on two power play opportunities. The Barons ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Justin Donnelly was ejected from the game.
