GAME RECAP

Perdue lifts Walkerton over Mitchell, 5-1

Western Jr. C    Sat, Oct 26, 2013

Josh Perdue was all over the ice for the Walkerton Hawks, as he tallied two goals in Walkerton's 5-1 win over the Mitchell Hawks.

Perdue found the back of the net 14:48 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Walkerton and again while short handed 17:13 into the second to make the score 3-1 Walkerton.

Mitchell was stymied by the Hawks netminder Trevor Fleming, who stopped 25 shots during the victory. The solid play of Fleming will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 3.36.

The Hawks' power play was ineffective against Walkerton's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

The Hawks were often in penalty trouble, totaling 10 minors and one major for 55 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 27.0 minutes per game Walkerton had been spending in the box. Mitchell was unable to stop the Hawks from sending pucks towards the net, and Walkerton eventually piled up 36 shots on goal.

Walkerton also got points from Drew Davidson, who also registered one goal and one assist and David Gallo, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Walkerton also got a goal from Brett Coulson as well. More assists for Walkerton came via Lauchlin Elder, who had two and Joel Bowman and Brooks Nelthorpe, who each chipped in one.

The Hawks racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. Mitchell surpassed its season average of 26.0 penalty minutes per game. The Hawks were held below their usual level of production. Mitchell puts an average of 4.3 pucks into the net per game.

The Hawks were led by Tyler Pauli, who scored the team's only goal. Pauli scored on the power play 10:03 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Mitchell. A roughing penalty on Davidson had put Mitchell on the power play. Adam Zehr picked up the assist.

The Hawks registered zero goals on one power play opportunities. For Walkerton, Jake Barclay was ejected from the game. Ben Nelson rejected 31 shots on goal for the Hawks. Mitchell ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Ryan Sykes was ejected from the game.
