Fergus rips Caledon, 4-1

The Caledon Golden Hawks had trouble finding ways to stop the Fergus Devils, which beat Golden Hawks, 4-1.

Fergus was led by goalie Parker Merkley, who finished with 30 saves while allowing one goal. The solid play of Merkley will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 4.55.

The Devils pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 40 penalty minutes.

Fergus' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on nine Caledon power plays.

The Devils were led by Robert Ebach, who tallied one goal and one assist. Ebach scored short handed 18:38 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Fergus. Fergus played down a man on Dustin Scheer's slashing. Griffin Heitshu assisted on the tally. Fergus also had goals scored by Cody Gresswell, James Murray, and Joshua Machesney, who each put in one. More assists for Fergus came via Ben Roelofson, who had one.

The Caledon penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 11 minors and one major for 77 minutes in penalty time. The Golden Hawks surpassed its season average of 31.0 penalty minutes per game. Caledon did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. The Golden Hawks put an average of 3.8 pucks into the net per game. The defense for Caledon tightened up when it had players in the penalty box, as it let in one goal on 14 the Devils power plays. The Golden Hawks' offense rang up 31 shots on Fergus' net.

Eric Pitcher made 25 saves for Caledon on 29 shots. For the Golden Hawks, Mark Smythe and James Pitsadiotas were ejected from the contest.
