Midland's comeback falls short, Orillia wins 6-5

The Orillia Terriers, who led by three goals at one point, survived a comeback attempt by Orillia and clinched a 6-5 victory.

The Terriers led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when Orillia's Josh Allan's scored short handed at 10:13 in the second period to put the Terriers up 4-1.

Jason Binnie was all over the ice for Orillia, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Binnie scored the first of his two goals at 2:15 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Orillia. Allan assisted on the tally. Binnie's next tally made the score 6-4 Orillia with 16:40 left in the third period. A holding penalty on Steven Pickard had put the Terriers on the power play. Jake Shaw picked up the assist.

The Midland Flyers' power play was ineffective against Orillia's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

The Terriers stifled Midland's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Orillia bested its season scoring average. The Terriers average 3.5 goals per game. Orillia found itself short handed often, totaling 28 penalty minutes and allowing seven power plays.

Orillia also got points from Ryan Tucci, who also registered one goal and one assist, Marty Lawlor, who also tallied one goal and two assists, Shaw, who also had one goal and three assists to lead the team in points, and Allan, who also finished with one goal and one assist. In addition, Orillia received assists from Jason Stone, who had one.

The the Flyers penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 10 minors and one major for 35 minutes in penalty time. Midland surpassed its season average of 24.0 penalty minutes per game. The Flyers forced the Terriers goalie Gordie Weiss to work between the pipes, taking 31 shots. Midland surpassed its usual scoring output this season. This season, the Flyers average 2.8 goals per contest.

Midland was helped by Matt Brown, who grabbed two goals. Brown scored the first of his two goals at 6:06 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Jake Evans provided the assist. Brown's next tally made the score 4-3 Orillia with 3:04 left in the second period. Matt Smith assisted on the tally. Midland additionally got points from Darren Nesbitt, who also registered one goal and one assist and Evans, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Liam Spurgeon also scored for Midland. More assists for Midland came via Brandon Stratton, Kaden Shearer, Neal Burgess, and Sean Crowe, who contributed one a piece.

Orillia's Weiss stopped 26 shots out of the 31 that he faced. The Terriers registered one goal on nine power play opportunities. Marco Colangelo made 24 saves for the Flyers on 30 shots. For Midland, Chris Goodfellow was ejected from the game.
