Schomberg uses shootout to best Stayner, 4-3 (3-2 SO)

Trisan Centre    Thu, Jan 02, 2014

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Schomberg Cougars defeated the Stayner Siskins in a shootout 4-3 (3-2 SO).

The shootout featured 16 attempts between both teams. Stayner's shootout goals were scored by Cooper Martin and Dakota Hynes. In addition to the clincher, Schomberg got shootout goals from Christian Muenz and John Gage.

Ryley Egerton had two goals to lead the Cougars to victory. Egerton found the back of the net on the power play 17:38 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Schomberg and again while on the power play 8:42 into the second to make the score 2-2.

Schomberg kept the Siskins' goalie busy throughout the game, and Aaron Taylor made 33 saves on 37 shots. The Cougars were held back by their power play unit, which tallied two goals on 10 chances. Schomberg was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 34 penalty minutes.

Schomberg also got points from Muenz, who also had one goal and one assist. In addition, Schomberg received assists from Nicholas Chaykowsky, who had two and Gage and Brandon Yorke, who contributed one a piece.

Stayner forced the Cougars goalie Taylor Ewart to work between the pipes, taking 37 shots. The Siskins had trouble converting on the power play advantage, managing just two goals on nine chances. Stayner could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 50 minutes in penalties during the game.

The Siskins were helped by Hynes, who tallied one goal. Hynes scored on the power play 19:48 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Stayner. Stayner had taken the advantage when Schomberg's Kiefer McIntosh got sent off for unsportsmanlike conduct. Derick Robertson picked up the assist. Stayner also had goals scored by Martin and Zachery Hannon, who each put in one. More assists for Stayner came via Trevor Franklin, Kyle Lafreniere, Corey DeRose, and Jason Seeley, who each chipped in one.

Ewart rejected 34 shots on goal for the Cougars.
