Schomberg uses big second period to beat Fergus, 13-2

The Schomberg Cougars scored six goals in the second period to pull away from the Fergus Devils and clinch a 13-2 win.

Blake Culley was all over the ice for Schomberg, as he tallied two goals and four assists in the win. Culley scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 7:41 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Schomberg. The Cougars earned a power play opportunity when Cody Haw was put in the box for hooking. Kevin Sarrazin picked up the assist. Culley's next tally on the power play made the score 10-2 Schomberg with 8:32 left in the third period.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 13:48 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts.

Schomberg made Devils' goalies to work all game long, launching 54 shots and forcing 41 saves. Parker Merkley made 25 stops and Alex Elliott made 16. The Cougars stifled Fergus' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Schomberg surpassed its usual scoring output this season. This season, the Cougars average 5.1 goals per contest. Schomberg's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Cougars finished with 31 penalty minutes.

Schomberg additionally got points from Kiefer McIntosh, who also racked up one goal and one assist, JP Crescenzi, who also had two goals and one assist, John Gage, who also registered one goal and one assist, and Brandon Yorke, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Colton Wood also scored for Schomberg. Other players who recorded assists for Schomberg were Mike Barosso, who had one, Declan Lampe and Justin Formenton, who contributed two a piece, and Mitch Safaric and Nicholas Chaykowsky, who each chipped in three.

The Devils' penalty kill unit could not stop Schomberg's power play, which converted on three of three opportunities.

Fergus was helped by Robert Ebach, who racked up one goal and one assist. Ebach scored 8:35 into the first period to make the score 1-1. James Murray assisted on the tally. Fergus also got a goal from Cody Gresswell as well. In addition, Fergus received assists from Patrick Snell, who had one.

Taylor Ewart recorded 18 saves for the Cougars. Team's Joel Wright AP, Christian Muenz, and Brandon Falsarella were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. The Devils totaled 26 minutes in penalty time with eight minors and two majors and went 0-for-4 on the power play. For Fergus, Griffin Heitshu and Dominic Weathall were ejected from the contest.
