Simcoe uses big second period to beat Port Dover, 7-2

The Simcoe Storm scored three goals in the second period to pull away from the Port Dover Sailors and clinch a 7-2 win.

Simcoe got the win thanks to a great game by Braden Roberts, who had one goal and three assists. Roberts scored on the power play 17:33 into the first period to make the score 3-2 Simcoe. The Storm had taken the advantage when Port Dover's Michael Almas got sent off for goalie interference. Braedan Walker assisted on the tally.

Simcoe pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 28 penalty minutes.

The Storm put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Sailors to score on any of their seven power plays. Simcoe outdid its season average for goals scored. This season, the Storm average 3.3 goals per contest.

Simcoe additionally got points from Conner Robinson, who also grabbed one goal and two assists and Walker, who also racked up two goals and three assists to lead the team in points. Ray Munroe also scored for Simcoe. In addition, Simcoe received assists from Brad Vervacke and Wade Metz, who contributed one a piece.

Port Dover racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and one major for 51 minutes in penalty time. The Sailors had been averaging 28.0 minutes in penalties per game. Port Dover's penalty kill managed to stymie Simcoe's power play, giving up only one goal while playing with a man down.

The Sailors were helped by Steve Parker, who tallied two goals. Parker scored the first of his two goals at 8:12 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Simcoe. Nick Deluca provided the assist. Parker's next tally made the score 2-2 with 8:04 left in the first period. Matt Vansickle picked up the assist.

The Storm's Avery Allen stopped 23 shots out of the 25 that he faced. Simcoe ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Dan Stewart was ejected from the game. Port Dover's starting goalie, Bob Wilson, made 14 saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Nathan McKinnon, who stopped nine shots. Team's Ryan Oatway and Taz Myers were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
