Hagersville beats Port Dover 4-2 after comeback scare

The Hagersville Hawks survived a determined comeback attempt by the Port Dover Sailors on the way to a 4-2 win.

A goal by Zach Maciel put Hagersville up 4-1 in the third period, but Port Dover pulled to within two on Matt Vansickle's tally 16:14 into the third period.

Cole Martin had a great game for the Hawks, netting two goals. Martin scored on the power play at 3:44 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Hagersville and again while 8:36 into the third to make the score 3-1 Hagersville.

Hagersville stifled the Sailors' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Hawks' offense rang up 45 shots on Port Dover's net. Hagersville was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 60 penalty minutes.

Hagersville also got points from Mitch Green, who also grabbed one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Other players who recorded assists for Hagersville were Brad Hornby, Jake Reichheld, Derek Medeiros, and Aleck Boyd, who each chipped in one.

The Sailors kept the Hawks' goalie busy throughout the game, and Tim Porter made 30 saves on 32 shots. Port Dover could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 28 minutes in penalties during the game. The Sailors was shut out on the power play, going scoring scoreless on 16 chances with a man advantage.

Port Dover additionally got points from Michael Almas, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. More assists for Port Dover came via Reilly Wilson and Josh Herter, who contributed one a piece.

Hagersville registered one goal on five power play opportunities. Nathan McKinnon made 41 saves for Port Dover on 45 shots.
