GAME RECAP

Simcoe vanquishes Chippawa in shootout, 4-3 (1-0 SO)

Talbot Gardens    Sun, Oct 20, 2013

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Simcoe Storm defeated the Chippawa Riverhawks in a shootout 4-3 (1-0 SO).

The two teams needed eight turns to complete the shootout.

Simcoe overcame a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Storm fell behind 3-2 after a short handed goal by Chippawa's Dack Petersen at 10:54 in the third period. Simcoe tied things up at 3-3 on a power play goal by Wade Metz at 10:54 in the third period.

The Riverhawks' power play was ineffective against the Storm's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Simcoe forced Riverhawks' goaltenders to work in net, firing 48 shots and forcing 44 saves. Colin Dunne made 25 stops and Ryan Humphreys made 19. The Storm's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Simcoe finished with 22 penalty minutes.

Simcoe also got points from Braden Roberts, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Jamie Kelly also scored for Simcoe. More assists for Simcoe came via Brad Vervacke, Conner Robinson, and Patrice Fozo, who contributed one a piece.

The Storm were unable to stop Chippawa from sending pucks towards the net, and the Riverhawks eventually piled up 49 shots on goal. Chippawa's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

The Riverhawks were helped by Michael Rogers, who racked up one goal. Rogers scored on the power play 16:00 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Chippawa had gained a power play chance when Kelly was whistled for roughing after whistle. Curtis Sauve provided the assist. Chippawa also got a goal from Luke Brackett as well. In addition, Chippawa received assists from Shawn Epp and Ryan Johnson, who each chipped in one.

Avery Allen rejected 46 shots on goal for Simcoe. The Storm registered one goal on four power play opportunities. The Riverhawks incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
