Aylmer falls to Exeter after surprising comeback

The Aylmer Spitfires could not hold down the Exeter Hawks, and Hawks erased a three-goal deficit en route to a 6-5 win.

Exeter let multiple leads slip away before eventually digging out of a three hole to pick up the win. The Hawks took a 1-0 advantage on a goal by Chiristopher Pfaff at 14:56 in the first period. Exeter found itself down 5-2 after Aylmer's Clint Walker put the puck home short handed at 16:49 in the second period. After evening things up at 5-5 on a goal by Kalvin Thornton at 12:23 in the third, the Hawks got the game-winner from Jesse McIntyre at 17:58 in the third period.

Exeter got the win behind a great game by Trevor Thornton, who had two goals and two assists. Thornton scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 10:47 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Aylmer. The Hawks had taken the advantage when the Spitfires' Jason Creces got sent off for cross checking. Brodie Balcom picked up the assist. Thornton's next tally on the power play made the score 5-4 Aylmer with 12:40 left in the third period. Thornton provided the assist.

Exeter also got points from Thornton, who also grabbed one goal and three assists to lead the team in points. In addition, Exeter received assists from Tyler Morey, who had two and Cam Dykstra and Robert Campbell, who contributed one a piece.

Aylmer forced Exeter goalie Joe Metzger to work between the pipes, taking 32 shots.

Trevor Stewart also scored for Aylmer. More assists for Aylmer came via Kyle Dedecker, Mark Macpherson, Cody Underhill, Trevor Richardson, Will Goodhue, Matthew Reese, and Josh Houston, who each chipped in one.

Metzger rejected 27 shots on goal for the Hawks. Exeter incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Dan Black recorded 22 saves for the Spitfires. Aylmer totaled 23 minutes in penalty time with nine minors and one major and went 1-for-4 on the power play. For the Spitfires, Stewart was ejected from the game.
