New Hamburg wins tough contest against Tavistock, 3-2

The game between the New Hamburg Firebirds and the Tavistock Braves was tight through all 60 minutes, but in the end New Hamburg emerged with a 3-2 win.

Each team kept the other at bay throughout the game, and Kyle McDonald secured the win for the Firebirds with a goal in the second period.

New Hamburg was paced by McDonald, who grabbed one goal. McDonald scored 18:59 into the second period to make the score 3-2 New Hamburg. David Jennings picked up the assist.

The the Firebirds penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 11 minors and one major for 47 minutes in penalty time. New Hamburg had been averaging 27.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Firebirds' offense operated below they season average. New Hamburg puts an average of 5.2 pucks into the net per game. The Firebirds' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

Others who scored for New Hamburg included Brandon Yantzi and Andrew Boer, who scored one goal each. More assists for New Hamburg came via Sean Kienapple, who had two and Tyler Randerson, Garrett Pollock, and Jaden Goetz, who each chipped in one.

Tavistock racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and one major for 41 minutes in penalty time. The Braves surpassed its season average of 22.0 penalty minutes per game. Tavistock's offense rang up 33 shots on New Hamburg's net.

The Braves were helped by Mackenzie Kalbfleisch, who tallied one goal. Kalbfleisch scored on the power play 14:18 into the second period to make the score 2-2. A roughing penalty on McDonald had put Tavistock on the power play. Tristan Hohl assisted on the tally. Jeremy Munro also scored for Tavistock. In addition, Tavistock received assists from Matthew Lupton and Dylan Yantzi, who contributed one a piece.

The Firebirds' Ryan Purcell stopped 31 shots out of the 33 that he faced. New Hamburg registered one goal on five power play opportunities. Team's Jay Fried and Kory Nowak were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Jason Miller rejected 24 shots on goal for the Braves. Tavistock registered two goals on eight power play opportunities. For the Braves, Sean Leslie and Matt Loader were ejected from the contest.
